His Birthday

ROBBIE RANE. You were born 27 years ago, and thank goodness. What would this world do without your love for animals, outer space and Native American culture? Your strength to chop down trees and build fires? Your great ideas that will inspire America to do their taxes? AND I would have never found love! Thank you for being born. And thanks to Mama and Papa Rane too.

And we now have a new birthday tradition called "Birthday Bucket." Basically you do something on your birthday that you've never done before and it could be as simple as milking a goat.

Robbie had narrowed it down to:
-Spearing a fish
-Fly fishing
-Massage from a professioinal
-Hair cut from professional (Robbie has cut his own hair ever since his mother stopped)

And this is what ended up happening:

Handsome right?

Realized that he liked getting his hair cut. He told me that he would do it every few months, but will continue to give himself his own $70 hair cuts in the mean time.

Today is a big day in our simple, little lives. We got a whole entire couch in our living room. And it's cobalt.

Robbie said we could only get a couch where he can lay out his entire body. Perfect fit.

Van Gogh Photo Shoot

A few months ago, Robbie and I did a super duper fun-tastic wedding shoot. My friend Danielle, who I met working at the BYU framing desk, is a photographer and was so kind to invite us to be her models for her Van Gogh wedding concept. It was recently featured on a wedding blog, the Wedding Chicks.

The shoot was inspired by this Van Gogh painting:

Sun Flowers

Since that time, Danielle and I were able to do a few trades! She helped shoot some of the wedding invites and I helped brand her new site. She is great to work with, has good ideas and is eager. If anyone gets to work with Danielle, they are in good hands.

Here are a few pictures from the Van Gogh day:

 And Van Gogh himself

And a painting of him

Thanks Danielle! We had so much fun!!

We have moved once again! But this time, it's just across town [twinkle in my eye]. And we have all our STUFF [second twinkle in my eye!].

Robbie and I have been living out of suitcases since last December. In the past 11 months, I felt so deprived of my clothes, shoes, blankets, trinkets, toys, etc etc etc.  But now seeing it all is the same room sickens me. HOW DO WE HAVE SO MUCH STUFF?? We are both "creative..." whatever. Anyways, I believe the person with a "creative" personality is really a hoarder. Creative = Hoarding. Same thing (this is a discussion for the future). We have lots of junk. But we've been really good of putting it in the Goodwill pile this time.

Also, I just want to say THANK YOU for all the wedding gifts. After our wedding, all the gifts went to storage while we tried to figure out what's up with our lives. As we opened to boxes we kept saying "OH YEAH!!!!" We got excited all over again. We really feel loved and super duper helped. You guys helped bring our new apartment together. MUCHOS BESOS GRANDES FOR YOU.

We love our apartment. Come visit? We'll clean up real nice.

all the good things + the junk

We are now: Portlandians

October 2013 has been a good month to us. Thank you October.

First off, our 6 month anniversary is in 2 days. Has it been that long? Well not yet. But it will be in 2 days. We've done a lot in the past 6 months. Robbie freelanced three times, we visited 9 states, lived in a tent for a week, and had just a few arguments. It's love.

But the real exciting this is that this good Dapper Dan Man here got a job at Wieden + Kennedy!!! He is an Art Director for Turbo Tax and Sony. He loves it. And now can't wait to do his taxes.

SO THAT MEANS we are now RESIDENTS of Stumptown/Bridgetown/Beervana/P-Town/PORTLAND! Wahooo! Can you believe it? I can't. I feel like we're going to get up and move across the country, visiting America's wonders, and working in freelance. I'm a little (just a tiny-bit) sad that I wont be a Nomad. I liked that title. I'm still going to keep it.

We found our very own apartment on the NE side of town.

Wedding Invite: Nathan + Amber

(I love receiving any form of note, drawing, or sugar cookie in the mail... FYI. You can send me something now if you want.)

It feels real swell seeing printed invites. I think the colors turned out reeeeal nice, and Amber and Nathan picked to print on a nice paper. Thanks guys.

The tricky part of this invite was the Art Deco border, I'm happy with the way it turned out.

Can't wait for the wedding.

Save the Date: McKenna + Jared

McKenna was one of my roommates a few years back and contacted me to design her invites. She showed me some invites she liked and I got really excited. They were all illustrated and had hand lettering. I've been wanting more opportunities to design invites with this look. YAY! So I'll be designing her Save the Dates (as you can see here), Wedding Invite, and Thank You Postcards.

Under Recunstruction

My bloggywoggy needs some beautifying. I once took this web design class where I was taught the language of the interwebs... but I never really learned it. Oops.

So. Beware.

I don't know what I'm going to do, but I WILL do something.

Our life is under construction. We find out real soon if we become Portlandians or not. I will let you know.

See ya later dude.

One day this week marks the third year of Mika and Robbie friendship. It's one of our holidays, and have celebrated it every year.

We're still not really sure what day it is, but who cares? Still a good reason to celebrate.

We met sometime in late September 2010, the week after Utah's Dirty Dash. On Sunday, he and his roommate Nathan overheard my roommates talking about the Dirty Dash and they came up and told us they ran it too, whatever, they just wanted to prove that they were just as cool as we were... Anyway,  Robbie says this conversation happened, but I don't remember it.

He came over that night to home teach (we don't really know if it was the same day, but I'm choosing my own adventure here and I'm deciding this is what happened), and he mentioned that he was applying for the advertising program, and SO WAS I. Fate. So we were excited that we had that in common. We showed each others Advertising application video (you have to make a commercial of yourself to prove your persuasiveness [that's a hard word to write] and coolness. I was to nervous to show mine to anyone else in case that would jinx me, but I found out later that I was fine). Later that week we went dumpster diving for stale baked goods. And we became Instant Friends, also similar to and just as good as Instant Idaho Potatoes.

And here are a few pictures from our first year being friends. Yay!

Goodbye Austin. Hello Portland.

Last Thursday was a normal Austin day. Robbie biked to work, it was 102 F, I tried a new meatball recipe, and was excited to watch Project Runway.

Robbie gets home and told me the news. W+K in Portland needed some help and offered Robbie some freelancing. And they needed him by Tuesday.

Um. Ok. I usually like to think of myself as "Adventure Mika" but really, sudden changes in my life are little difficult... just kidding, very difficult, for like 3 hours. After I pulled myself together, I got excited.

Robbie went back to work on Friday, and everyone at GSD&M were very understanding, said something like "thanks for coming, we hope you come again soon!", thanks GSD&M, we hope so too. I packed all day, trying to eat all the food that would go bad, and kept packing. That night we went to Alamo Drafthouse, (a very Austin movie theater where  you order dinner and scarf it up during the movie, they also do quote-a longs and sing-a longs ex. Grease) I ate the most caloric peanut butter shake. Yum.

Saturday morning we said goodbye to our landlord and his 4 dogs. He handed us a big box of travel snacks, and jamaica juice.

Landlord Daniel, and a very tired me.  Hello... I'm not a morning person.

Our drive to Portland was 2,000 + miles. So we divided it into 4 days.

So we went to 4 Corners Monument (where New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and... Colorado? meet), and Moab. Robbie was surprised that the 4 corners was only a monument. He thought it was supposed to be an ancient Anasazi ruins... so that was a little disappointment to him, but I loved it. And Moab was beautiful. It was raining and cloudy and MAGIC.

A Big Bird

W+K offers housing to freelancers, and we are staying in the nicest place we will ever live in our entire lives. It's a two story appartment, and even has an extra furnished room with a twin size bed. I LOVE having company so if you want to visit, come! We will be here for at least 1 month.

A few weeks ago, Robbie surprised me with a ticket to Rochester NY to visit family!! My Uncle Bryce, Aunt Zion and my cousins Dane and Bijoux live there.

For the past few years, whenever I see Zion, I tell her that I just want her to teach me how to decorate cakes and make bread, so this was a dream come true.

I had  a great week! The kids were so fun! I learned a lot from Zion, and watched some fun movies with Bryce.

Thanks Robbie! Thanks Bryce and Zion!

Here are a few photos that I took to document my visit.

Zion's looks fantastic

Working on a Zombie Event for Details Austin.... and my only requirement is that I make it badass. This is on one side of the card.... I'm trying to make it look like Graffiti but I'm not sure it's working quite right.
Any suggestions? Ideas?
I'm going to try two other directions tomorrow - all the weapons you would use to kill a Mr. or Mrs. Zombie or just Zombie guts and stuff. Right up my ally. Can't wait.

Save the Date // Austin Style

This is my most recent project from Details Austin. An Austin Save the Date!
Pretty much all the illustrations are from the city landmarks, which the client requested, and their love story. It folds in half (hamburger style).

This was difficult project for me because there was soo much information. I prefer simplicity, but I think this turned out alright. I wish some things turned out differently, but I'm happy with it.
